CANET EN ROUSSILLON
TO SEE – TO DO
THE CANET-EN-ROUSSILLON LAKE
This is a rare ecosystem listed as part of the Nature 2000, a network of sites in the European Union which aim to preserve the natural habitats of all plant and bird species living in their natural state. With over 246 species recorded and nearly 200 migrating bird species, the lake has become a unique observation site.
THE FISHERMAN VILLAGE
The fisherman village is composed of 10 thatched huts built on the edge of the Canet lake, They were restored in 1993 with traditional materials. Guided tours of the lake are available on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 10am to 12pm as of the month of June.

DIVE INTO A VAST OCEAN OF VINEYARDS NEARLY TOUCHING THE SEA
5 wine-growing estates are located in its area: Domaine Lafage, Château de l’Esparrou, Château de Rey, Château des Hospices and Mas baux. Red, white, rosé but also some sweet dessert wines. With the appellations Côtes du Roussillon or PGI (protected geographical indication), they have refashioned the image of wines from the Roussillon region. Any of the former will warmly welcome for wine-tastings and tours.
WALKING AND FRUIT PICKING AT THE ARBORETUM
Here you can wander amongst 500 species of plants and original artworks scattered here and there … you can happen across an organic water basin with its giant water lilies, a desert garden with exceptional cactus plants and lush orchards where you can pick varied seasonal fruit and vegetables yourself. From May to September, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30am to midday.
VISIT THE VILLAGE, THE CHURCH OF ST JACQUES AND THE VICOMTAL CASTLE
Canet boasts an obvious picturesque charm with its buildings in cairou, a local red brick and river pebbles. It was a former stronghold as evidenced by the remaining sections of the wall or tower and the ramparts, which are gone. Its lordly castle dates back to around 1050 and discloses a remarkable ice well from 1688 (currently being restored). The Gothic church of Saint-Jacques is single-nave and covered by a framework roof. The ramparts also serve as the walls for the Galerie des Hospices where talented artists regularly show-off their work.
