SAINTE MARIE LA MER

A village at the beach… This municipality is a family-oriented seafront resort with around 3500 inhabitants year-long and over 20,000 people over the summer months. During the tourist season, this beach resort offers countless, and often free, leisure activities along the beach with Zumba, CrossFit, yoga, soft gym classes… learn traditional dances like Sardana or attend musical balls and enjoy fun-filled nights along with a string of activities for kids. Sainte Marie combines the charm of a lovely Catalan village with the modernity of a rapidly expanding seaside resort. Proud of its culture and heritage, the municipality pursues an artistic tradition by displaying contemporary art throughout the streets. You can admire some great trompe-l’œil paintings, temporary artwork, statues or sculptures scattered around the heart of the old village. Each summer, there is a new temporary art exhibit. Last but not least, Sainte Marie is a village where rugby is good-naturedly played, celebrated and adored by its inhabitants.

TO SEE – TO DO

LOVERS ALLEYWAY
Tucked away in a small narrow street of the village, this alley is worthy of its name! In the summer, this Passage du 18 Juin is concealed by red, heart-shaped umbrellas. They shelter lovers wanting to symbolically cement their love by attaching a customized name-engraved padlock onto a metal grate placed precisely for this purpose.

THE TROMPE-L’ŒIL by BERNARD GOUT
Bernard GOUT was born in Perpignan but lives in Sainte-Marie-la-Mer. He excels in the art of murals and trompe l’oeil when he’s not using his easel … This self-taught artist portrays a skilfully parallel world, permeated with undeterrable mystery, surprises and emotions. Teddy bear, cat or dog, arguing grandmothers, a fountain or a horse? There are 12 of them, do you think you’ll find them all?
The Lido Garden on the beach provides information panels regarding the local fauna and flora (nature rallies are scheduled by the Tourist Office so don’t hesitate to request information at the front desk).

ALL TYPES OF SPORTS

– FITNESS AREA
An open-air fitness area facing the sea, composed of 6 fitness machines: elliptical trainer, cross-country ski machine, push and pull equipment …

EVENING STROLLS
Meandering, par excellence! Buy some souvenirs or enjoy tasting something sweet … On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays as of 6pm, there’s an evening market on the seafront from 1 July to 31 August.
